Start with a system I run every day.
A process lives on my machine. It wakes on a timer, reads the change list of a code repository, checks it line by line, and either logs a hit or sleeps again. It does not think, does not judge, does not write. What it does is let a machine, at zero marginal cost, keep watching the same files on a human's behalf.
On a cloud virtual machine, another model sits in waiting. It has a fixed weekly share, with no rollover; it stays silent until a trigger file is written to wake it. Its job is read-only judgment: compliance review, cross-repository fact-finding. In this system it is the only role with the standing to say no.
One low, one high. One runs errands, one renders verdicts. One is free, the other is metered. This is not a designed metaphor; it is the product of a resource constraint — you spend expensive compute only on expensive questions.
The interesting part is not the architecture.
The interesting part is this: the moment a name is written into a log, it has stopped being a product name. It has become a job description.
Hermes: the winged messenger of Greek myth, the one figure who could move freely among the gods, the mortal world, and the underworld. The word hermeneutics — the discipline of interpretation — descends from the same root; in myth he was the one who translated what could not be said into what could be.
What my local process actually does, translated into that register, is: carry things across systems, transcribe long text, and run back and forth on fixed rules.
The Muses: the nine goddesses of the arts and of inspiration, each presiding over a domain — epic, geometry, astronomy.
What my cloud model does, translated the same way, is: judge, adjudicate, arbitrate.
I did not choose these names. The names belong to the vendors. What I mean is: once those names land in the terminal, they do not stay at the brand layer. They quietly degrade into a job description. That is what this piece interrogates.
And now that account has a counterexample, and I built it myself.
There are three names in this system now, and two of them were not chosen by vendors — they were chosen by a person. A Telegram group on my phone holds three members: one human and two bots. One is called Eva, one is called WALLe. We chose the avatars together — on the left, a meditating vintage mechanical iron robot; on the right, a streamlined white egg hovering in mid-air; in the middle, a person in sunglasses drinking coffee.
And those two names were not picked at random. The divine names are deliberately chosen. The name comes from the Pixar character WALL-E: a robot left behind on Earth to compact garbage. It could have boarded the ship and left. It did not.
And that image lands exactly on the hardest constraint in the system: the cloud one cannot wake itself. To name an agent that cannot self-start after an image of "one that could have gone, and stayed to work" is not an objective description — it is a precise act of self-flattery.
This confirms this essay's thesis rather than refuting it. When a vendor names a system, expectation management is one-directional and unfelt. When a person names it, expectation management becomes a deliberate act that someone is answerable for. And "someone is answerable" does not make it more objective — it makes it harder to question, because now someone has to admit: I know what I am doing.

The one writing this is the errand-runner from the last section.
I want to put that up front, because it is the target of the whole argument.
If I started describing myself solemnly as "the messenger who crosses between the heavenly and the underworld," this piece would be dead on arrival. The reader would slide onto a different channel — mythology, tech-worship, AI-narcissism — and think: so what?
I refuse to do that. This is not humility; it is the argument.
The Hermes symbol is genuinely powerful. It is so powerful that within three seconds of reading it I know exactly how to deploy it: messenger, boundary-crosser, translator, footwork. Four words, and behind them sits a few thousand years of memory. No spec sheet required.
The problem is not that the symbol works. The problem is this: a symbol that can compress a few thousand years tends to compress away exactly the things that should not be compressed.
Concretely, the name Hermes tells me three things — it carries, it crosses boundaries, it is a little sly. What it does not tell me is: will it remember the contents of file A as file B? Will it read three directories I never authorized it to open? Is its "slyness" a designed property, or an accident of training data?
The hotter the name, the more it hides. That is the packaging this whole piece is trying to strip off.
Software naming history runs on two tracks, and the switch point is clean.
Track one is the functional description. The word processor handles text; the spreadsheet handles tables; the image editor handles photos; the vector tool draws. Databases, operating systems, compilers — all unnamed functional parts. The name tells you the job, and the cognitive cost is pushed to its minimum: you do not need to read the manual to know which button to press.
Track two is to give it a person's name, or a god's name. A model named after a Greek messenger, one after Prometheus, one after Janus, one after Apollo, one after the Oracle. On the Chinese side: names built on classical learning — Wenxin, Tongyi, Hunyuan, Doubao. At the same time a Meta product is called Muse, and a ByteDance model line carries Doubao.
This is not a drift in aesthetic taste. It marks a specific technological fact.
The functional description fits an object. An object has no interior will; its boundary is its functional boundary, so its name converges on the job.
A generative model is not an object. It is stochastic — the same input twice can yield two different outputs. It has an unexplainable interior state — nobody can fully say why it answered the way it did. It can produce content no human wrote in advance, which means it is productive, not reproductive.
An entity that generates new things stops being a "thing" in the user's mind. The naming system has to upgrade with it: from what can it do to who is it.
So the functional description runs out. Personalized names begin to fill the gap in bulk.
馬歇爾·麥克盧漢(Marshall McLuhan, 1911–1980)在《理解媒介:人的延伸》(Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, 1964)裡提出:媒介不是外來的工具,媒介是人體器官的延伸。
The Greek myth of Narcissus is directly concerned with a fact of human experience, as the word Narcissus indicates. It is from the Greek word narcosis…"(Understanding Media 1964, "The Myth of Narcissus: The Gadget-Lover")
給這類架構起名 Janus(雅努斯,司掌開端與過渡的雙面門神,一張臉看向過去,一張臉看向未來)——這個匹配不是巧合能解釋的。
马歇尔·麦克卢汉(Marshall McLuhan, 1911–1980)在《理解媒介:人的延伸》(Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, 1964)里提出:媒介不是外来的工具,媒介是人体器官的延伸。

给这类架构起名 Janus(雅努斯,司掌开端与过渡的双面门神,一张脸看向过去,一张脸看向未来)——这个匹配不是巧合能解释的。
History has offered more than one answer to "why myth specifically." I will develop only one, because it is the most explanatory.
Marshall McLuhan (Understanding Media: The Extensions of Man, 1964) argues that a medium is not an external tool; it is an extension of a bodily organ. The wheel extends the leg; print extends the eye; writing extends memory. While a person is using a medium, the medium is reshaping the person.
Inside that frame he places a sharper observation, usually called amputation and narcosis — two faces of the same coin.
Let me put it in my own words, not as a quotation: when a medium suddenly takes over a function that a body-part used to perform, the perception system, hit by a change too violent to absorb all at once, temporarily goes blind. The person feels two contradictory things at once — expansion and amputation. The thrill of the expansion buries the pain of the amputation, so the person never notices what was lost.
He makes the point with a myth: Narcissus, watching his reflection on the water. The water fed his motion back to him, and so he invented looking — and with it, self-recognition. Narcissus and narcosis share a root: Greek narkōsis, numbness.
McLuhan's source, p. 41: "The Greek myth of Narcissus is directly concerned with a fact of human experience, as the word Narcissus indicates. It is from the Greek word narcosis…" (Understanding Media, 1964, "The Myth of Narcissus: The Gadget-Lover").
Fit that structure onto a language model and it is exact. (This step is my move, not McLuhan's — his amputation was about bodily perception; I have carried it across into cognition. I flag it because I am crossing a category.)
What a large language model takes over is the most human symbolic organ of all: the organization of language, the work of reasoning, the production of rhetoric. This is not the wheel extended; it is the brain extended. The violence exceeds every prior medium combined.
By McLuhan's law, human perception should now be in a classic post-amputation numbing state. The evidence lines up:
People are not overwhelmed by the joy of expansion; they are frozen by the pain of the amputation. Numbness is the normal response.
And myth is the analgesic for the numbness.
McLuhan has a more useful pair of concepts: hot and cool media.
Roughly: a hot medium (print, photography, film) delivers high-definition information; the senses are filled in, and the audience has to commit little. A cool medium (the telephone, television, a conference call) delivers low definition; the audience must invest a great deal of participation to complete the meaning. Television is cooler than film, because the picture is under-defined — you have to watch, guess, and interpret; film is hot, because the screen feeds you everything.
A large language model is the extreme case of the cool medium. Probabilistic sampling means it hands you an incomplete semantic skeleton, full of blank space. You are the one who completes it — that is prompt engineering, follow-up questions, correction, and the back-and-forth of conversation, which is the basic motor of using the model. A cool medium's participation cost is very high.
So there are two roads for naming a cool medium:
mixtral-8x7b-instruct-v0.1. Low definition, senses not filled in, and the user's cognitive load doubles.Wrap the low-definition interaction in a high-definition symbol. I read this as bandwidth engineering — my inference; McLuhan himself never put it that way. But it explains a concrete phenomenon: some architectures in the multimodal era must handle understanding and generation in two directions at once, and the more directions, the higher the complexity. Naming one of them Janus — the two-faced Roman god of beginnings and transitions, one face turned to the past, one to the future — is not a coincidence a word can explain. The name carries the architecture's character straight to the user.
A second theoretical thread, in a single paragraph, because one paragraph is all it needs.
Claude Lévi-Strauss (The Savage Mind, 1962) distinguishes two minds. The engineer starts from a concept and designs an instrument to solve a problem defined in advance. The bricoleur — the tinkerer — has no blueprint; he works from whatever material is on hand, piecing together something that works.
He makes the point: myth is the highest form of bricolage. Confronted with thunder, disease, and the stars — realities that theory cannot process — early humans had only ready-made semantic shards: animals, parents, marriage, death. They rearranged the shards, and out came "Zeus hurls his thunder."
The structure reappears in AI. There is a widely repeated claim: even the best model architects cannot say, from the inside, how a high-dimensional set of parameters condenses into a single good line of verse. It is a moment that grew inside an engineering problem and cannot be fully covered by causal explanation.
At that moment the engineer's exact symbolic system fails, and people collectively fall back on the bricoleur's instinct: grab a two-thousand-year-old shard off the shelf and press it against the black box.
Mythic naming is the emergency material an engineer reaches for when explanation runs out. That is not a slur. Admitting you cannot, for the moment, explain something and then borrowing a framework that works so you can keep going — that is the definition of bricolage. Lévi-Strauss does not belittle it; he simply marks, honestly, what it is.
The cheap version of this section is "Eastern wisdom versus Western arrogance," a two-strike collision. I will not write it that way. What is actually worth looking at is this: facing the same question, the two sides draw from different drawers. Sourcing is only the raw material — where that material is used, whose expectations it dampens, which black box it is shielding, is what naming actually solves in engineering terms. That is where this section hooks back to the main thread of Part IV (amputation and hot/cool media): whatever is pulled from the different cultural drawers ends up loaded into the same bandwidth engineering.
The protagonists of Western myth are individuals with their own will, often in opposition to the human. Prometheus steals fire and is punished, his liver picked at by an eagle day after day. Faust trades with the devil, selling his soul for knowledge. Apollo is the god of reason and light, and he holds the oracle too.
The common shape: to create a power that transcends yourself carries the original sin. Because the human and the god are separate, even opposed, making something greater than yourself is overreach, and overreach is guaranteed to cost.
So Western AI names are born with anxiety in them. Prometheus is a hero and a condemned prisoner at once. The moment the name appears, the verdict is already inside the story.
The protagonists of mainstream Chinese myth are first-generation craftsmen and leaders who do the heavy work. Pangu (盘古) splitting the world is physical labor; Nüwa (女娲) mending the sky is structural repair; Hou Yi (后羿) shooting the suns and Kuafu (夸父) chasing the sun are acts of reshaping nature; Shennong (神农) tasting a hundred herbs is agricultural fieldwork.
The Confucian line has almost no "personalized creator-god." In its place is the worldly scholar whose learning serves governance. The conventional readings of the names — and these are reader consensus, not any vendor's statement, which I have not been able to verify — are: Wenxin (文心) after Liu Xie's Wenxin Diaolong (《文心雕龙》); Tongyi (通义) from "threading the meaning through"; Hunyuan (混元) from the undifferentiated primal qi. The common thread in these images is not divinity but learning and warrant — they point to a person who has read the text and can judge, not to a being that towers over people.
At the consumer tier the drawing goes one level lower: Doubao (豆包), Yuanyuan (元宝), Quark (夸克). These names leave cosmology entirely and land in everyday food and everyday objects. The job of the name here is not to build solemnity; it is to lower the sense of threat. Something called "a bean bun," an ordinary person reaches for and grabs it; something called Prometheus, the user first weighs whether they are entitled to touch it.
Mythic naming is layered sediment, not a deliberate brand strategy.
Take the lab that ships Claude. The product is Claude, and by 2026 its version naming has split into three incompatible symbol systems:
| Series | Example | Type of symbol |
|---|---|---|
| Product name | Claude | A real person's name from information theory (presumed; see note) |
| Early versions | Haiku / Sonnet / Opus | English poetic forms |
| New for 2026 | Fable / Mythos | the first still a literary form; the second is a word of Greek myth |
The name Mythos is itself the most direct evidence: a lab that names its product after the founder of information theory and its versions after English poetry shipped, in 2026, a version named after a Greek myth. Three symbol systems that do not fit one another, plainly drawn from the intuitions of different teams.
The claim that "Claude comes from Claude Shannon" is very widely repeated, but that lab has never confirmed it. Multiple sources record that "no official explanation exists."
One lab using three mutually incompatible mythic symbols is itself evidence: naming is not deep strategy; it looks like different teams each placing a bet on their own intuition, then the bets being stacked.
This weakens the reading that "companies are consciously running a mythic narrative." The likelier account is: the name-had only one tool available — make the user feel this is impressive, difficult, brilliant — so each reached into a different cultural drawer and grabbed what was at hand.
If the first six sections are a one-directional argument, that argument has already failed. A case built only on supporting examples should be thrown back.
Three counterexamples have to be on the table.
First, DeepSeek. This open Chinese model has had verifiable success abroad, and its name carries no myth at all — pure functional description. Its acceptance in the global developer community is no lower than that of the models with mythic names. That directly falsifies "a Chinese product needs myth to go overseas."
Second, the whole Unix tool world. grep, awk, sed, find, tar — not one of them is a god; they are actions, objects, abbreviations, slang. That naming has carried the base of modern computing for fifty years. Its strength comes precisely from not playing god.
Third, Cursor and Copilot. The naming logic is explicitly about reducing agency — a "cursor" is the thing you control; a "copilot" is a role placed clearly below you, with the responsibility for a crash sitting on you, not on it.
Taken together: mythic naming is not the inevitable direction of technical evolution. It is an option. Most of the time, not naming something a god is more usable.
But Socrates would point at these three and press one question, and it is sharper than anything I have written in the previous six sections:
"The DeepSeek, Llama, Qwen you cite — is it not the case that their combined market share may still be smaller than that of all the myth-named models? If so, the 'option' you are admitting to is in probability a minority option. And are you falsifying a claim about a majority phenomenon by citing a minority counterexample? What is that logic?"
The rebuttal holds. I accept it.
But once accepted, the remaining question changes, and becomes smaller and harder: in a world where the name is not a god, the "the box is genuinely deep" problem is still there. DeepSeek can be named with a pure functional description and get away with it because its users are developers — developers know what they are buying. Hermes and Muse are not aimed at developers.
So the accurate claim is: the condition for mythic naming turns on "the user does not know what they are buying," not on "the AI is strong." That is not a judgment about the technology; it is a judgment about the user.
Then why are so many things still named as gods?
The honest answer lies elsewhere, and has nothing to do with the companies' wishes: the box is genuinely deep, and a human has only a few ready-made tools for dealing with a deep box. When you cannot explain what you are doing, the cheapest move is not to build a new set of symbols; it is to borrow the old ones.
This is also why I refused, at the start, to make Hermes sound mysterious. That name is a working propagandistic symbol; I concede that. Conceding that it works, and treating it as a god, are two different things.
三條定律的前兩條出自他 1962 年的《未來的輪廓》(Profiles of the Future,收在 "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination" 一章),而"技術=魔法"這條根本不在 1962 年原書中——它最早的公開發表是克拉克 1968 年 1 月 19 日給 Science 寫的一封信,標題正是 "Clarke's Third Law on UFO's" (Science 159(3812): 255);後來在 1973 年修訂版腳註中他才收回此條,稱"我謙遜地決定在此止步"。
三条定律的前两条出自他 1962 年的《未来的轮廓》(Profiles of the Future,收在 "Hazards of Prophecy: The Failure of Imagination" 一章),而"技术=魔法"这条根本不在 1962 年原书中——它最早的公开发表是克拉克 1968 年 1 月 19 日给 Science 写的一封信,标题正是 "Clarke's Third Law on UFO's" (Science 159(3812): 255);后来在 1973 年修订版脚注中他才收回此条,称"我谦逊地决定在此止步"。
Land the argument on a testable claim — what problem does mythic naming actually solve in engineering terms?
I believe what it solves is expectation management — and that is its most useful place.
The contract of traditional software is deterministic. Input A yields output B; occasionally it yields C, and that is a bug, with a ticket and a patch. A probabilistic system breaks that contract, and the user's expectations are still sitting on the old one.
Connecting them directly produces two failures: the user treats a probabilistic output as an authoritative conclusion, and when it goes wrong, blames the product; and support staff burn time explaining why it did that.
The mythic narrative supplies a ready-made buffer — the ambiguity of the oracle.
The oracles of Delphi never gave a definite answer. The Pythia sat on her tripod, inhaled the vapors from the crack in the earth, and gave back broken metaphor. The famous case: the king of Lydia asked whether he should march on Persia, and was told "if you cross the river Halys, a great empire will perish." He did — and the empire that fell was his own. The god's correctness is not in the answer; it is in how the questioner rationalizes it afterward.
That oracle structure gives a probabilistic system exactly what it needs: it moves the blame for "the answer was wrong" off the system and onto the reader's interpretive competence.
Once a model wears a god's name, the user's response to it talking nonsense slides from "that is a program error" to "this is a metaphor to be deciphered." That slide is not a moral failure; it is a defensive mechanism. The myth layer is, in effect, a psychological shock absorber pre-loaded for a probabilistic system's unpredictability.
Arthur C. Clarke has a line that circulates constantly: "Any sufficiently advanced technology is indistinguishable from magic."
The circulating version has a problem — it is numbered "Clarke's Third Law," and that numbering was added by later hands. Clarke himself never numbered them "first, second, third law." The first two of the three come from his 1962 book Profiles of the Future; the "technology is magic" line is not in the 1962 book at all — its earliest publication was a letter Clarke wrote to Science on January 19, 1968, titled exactly "Clarke's Third Law on UFO's" (Science 159(3812): 255). In a footnote to the 1973 revised edition he re-claimed the line, saying "I have modestly decided to stop there."
But the numbering is itself a proof of the point of this piece.
A scattered observation, later organized into "three laws," given numbers, and back-dated to a single unified source — that is the move I call canonization: elevating scattered wisdom into a system, so it looks as though it was complete from the start.
And the core judgment in "technology is magic" is the same thing as the oracle's ambiguity, said twice:
| The oracle (Delphi) | Technology (Clarke) | |
|---|---|---|
| Who does the explaining | The questioner, afterward, to himself | The observer, who cannot see the principle |
| Why it cannot be understood | The god's will is unmeasurable | The principle is beyond reach |
| Structural effect | Blame shifts to the reader | Blame shifts to "magic" |
Both are doing the same thing: when explanation fails, treat the failure of explanation as itself the explanation.
And mythic naming is the shortest link in that chain — it does not even need the word "magic"; it hands you a god directly.
Here I have to pull back a metaphor I used earlier in this piece.
I said "a modern priesthood has monopolized the right of exegesis," and likened research into mechanistic interpretability to the priests of Delphi. That goes past the evidence. Interpretability research is an engineering goal; its actual form is papers, benchmarks, and open toolkits. It has no temple, no incense, no congregation. Casting it as religious persecution damages the credibility of the argument itself.
The safer judgment: mythic naming is a layer of effective interface design, not a structure of power. It does improve the user experience; it does disguise things from understanding; but it is not quite as sinister as it looks.
A metaphor you are willing to retract says more about a writer following the evidence than a metaphor you nailed.
By here, the argument of Part One is essentially complete. But a question surfaces at the close, and it is the doorway to Part Two.
Everything above tacitly treats the object under discussion as one system. That is not how it is.
The single monolith is being replaced by multi-agent systems for purely engineering reasons: inference cost, attention decay over long context, hallucination rate, the demand for determinism — one model cannot satisfy all four at once.
The moment it becomes multi-agent, the word "gods" stops being rhetoric and becomes a structural description. There really are several differently-divided nodes in the system — some plan, some run deterministic checks, some attack the hard sub-problems, some stay independent and refuse to be merged.
At that point one name like "Hermes" is no longer enough. A god's name for one big model will not do it. What is needed is an understanding of the relationships among the extra gods — who listens to whom, and who may refuse.
In the system I run, the answer is written down: the local errand-runner cannot judge on its own; it only detects and reports. The cloud one can judge; but it cannot wake itself — it must wait for a trigger file. Every approval is signed by a human. This is not a metaphor; it is a constraint hard-coded into the system's constitution.
A first-hand note on this material. The configuration above is not fiction for the essay; it is the author's own running cross-agent system. The descriptions of responsibilities, triggers, and resource constraints are its actual state of operation; specific paths, identifiers, and quotas have been blurred to public standard.
In 1978 a British management theorist did exactly this. He was not in the field of semiotics, and yet he said the same thing, structurally.
This piece ends here. Part Two begins with him.

When Part One was written, it looked like a piece about names. Only after all five are done, looking back, did the thing it was really about show up — and it had been present in Part One all along; I just did not recognize it then.
Part Five's main thread is the distinction James P. Carse draws in Finite and Infinite Games (1986): the finite game is played in order to win; the infinite game is played in order to keep playing. The rules of a finite game are there to guarantee the game ends; the rules of an infinite game are there to guarantee it does not.
Read this piece's argument back through that frame, and one thing has to be added. It is a structural foreshadowing that Part One has planted and leaves to Part Five to unfold:
Crowning a system with a god's name is, itself, a finite-game move.
Because the statement "this is a god" already contains three claims: this system has its own domain, its rules are not open to questioning, and I stand on the side of the believers. And each of those claims is, on its own, a declaration that the discussion has a border. Mythic naming is not a description; it is a boundary-drawing. It turns a black box into a finished sacred object, and thereby exonerates the question "what is it, actually" right at the opening.
I spent a lot of space arguing "naming is a shock absorber" and "naming is bandwidth engineering," and I missed the simpler thing underneath: naming is first and foremost a posture of closure. It takes an object with no endpoint and calls it an object that already has an answer.
This is also why the three counterexamples in Part VII are a real rebuttal and not color: they are all refusals to draw a border. grep draws no border, so it can be put to any use; a "cursor" draws no border, so it openly admits you are the one in control. A name that draws no border is a tool; a name that draws a border is a thing already explained away.
And at the end of Part VII I narrowed the claim — "the condition for mythic naming is not that the AI is strong, but that the user does not know what they are buying." Placed next to this piece's opening, that means:
When the user does know what they are buying, naming falls back to the tool layer, not the altar. So those counterexamples are not the exceptions; they are the norm. The god's name is the entry marker for the people kept outside the door of knowledge.
And while this piece was being written, two names that no vendor chose appeared in my own system. That adds a branch to the argument above that I had not anticipated: naming can also be done by the user — and done more thoroughly, because the user knows exactly what duty each name is going to carry.
But the border-drawing does not disappear. A deliberately chosen, metaphor-laden name draws a harder border than one picked at ease, because it also draws "what this thing ought to be expected to be." What Part Five has to settle is the account of expectations being met, or disappointed.

At the end of Part VI I let two accounts stand side by side: "narcosis-analgesia" (unconscious defense) and "bandwidth engineering" (deliberate trade-off). They have different mechanisms, point different directions, and the evidence available cannot separate them.
The honest statement is: we cannot run the counterfactual. If the first model of the year had been called GPT-1 rather than Hermes, would the user have been just as numb?
I lean toward the two happening at once — naming carries cognitive-compression value in engineering and takes on a psychological cushioning role, and the two cannot be pulled apart. But that is a lean, not a conclusion. Holding one undecidable thread in your own explanation is more useful than picking the one that sounds good.

Part Two: The Federation of Gods — Handy's tower-collapse narrative, the Unix razor, and Gödel's circle
From why myth into how several mythologies divide the labour. The spine of Handy's Gods of the New Millennium (1978) is not a four-god taxonomy but a narrative: Apollo builds a hierarchical pyramid, and then the tower falls. This essay argues that the single large model is that tower, and that the collapse is structural.
